Caring for Fine, Curly Hair Through Connecticut Winters

Cold, dry air flattens fine curls. A few changes to your wash and dry routine keep them defined all season.

Fine, curly hair is the hardest combination to manage. The curl needs moisture to hold its shape, but fine hair goes limp the moment it is weighed down. Connecticut winters make it worse. Cold outside, dry heat inside, and your curls collapse by noon.

Cut back on shampoo frequency in winter. Two or three washes a week is enough for most curl types, and a co-wash between full washes keeps the scalp comfortable without stripping the curl pattern.

Apply leave-in conditioner to soaking-wet hair, not damp. Water is what carries the product through the strand. Work it in with your hands, scrunch upward, and stop touching once it starts to dry. Every touch past that point breaks the clump.

Dry with a cotton t-shirt or a microfiber towel, never a terry towel. Terry roughs up the cuticle and creates frizz. Press and squeeze, do not rub.

Get the cut right. Fine curls live and die by the shape. A stylist who takes the time to cut dry, curl by curl, will give you a shape that falls into place on its own. That is the single biggest difference between a good curly cut and a flat one.

Book a trim every ten to twelve weeks through the cold months. Split ends travel up the curl faster in dry air, and once the pattern breaks at the bottom, no product will bring it back.
